Girls softball held Morningside High School scoreless, winning 22-0 on Tuesday at Morningside. Mira Costa forced the mercy rule after only five innings of play.
Senior pitcher Dillan Boada and sophomore pitcher Elliot Estes both pitched, and combined struck out 13 of the 15 Morningside batters.
“It is always great to get a shutout, and it was a great team effort,” Boada said.
The Mustangs started off strong, scoring seven runs in the first inning. They pushed ahead with clean hits and crisp catches. Senior shortstop Brittany Werre drove in senior center fielder Kasey Hutton when she hit a triple.
“Brittany and Hutton came in really strong,” senior outfielder Samantha Matson said. “They set the tone of the game very early on.”
Sophomore first baseman Emily Eudy started off the second inning with a home run, and Costa finished off the second with a strong lead, 9-0.
“We dominated from the beginning, and it was great to get a home run for the team,” Eudy said.
Costa stepped it up again in the third with six runs. Estes substituted in for Boada to pitch the last two innings, and Costa continued increasing its score with another five runs in the fourth inning, including a home run from Hutton. Costa finished the fifth and final inning of the game with another two runs, winning 22-0.
“Everyone was really in their game mode today, and our offense was extremely solid,” Boada said.
The Mustangs have an overall record of 20-7 and a Bay League record of 8-1. The Mustangs played against Redondo Union High School yesterday in Mira Costa’s senior game, but results were unavailable at the time of publication.
“This win gave us a lot of confidence as we prepare for CIF,” Matson said.
