Costa’s Relay for Life Club is hosting its annual overnight walk-a-thon from May 30 to 31 at Manhattan Beach Middle School in which different teams walk to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Due to construction, the event changed from its original location, Waller Stadium, to MBMS. Relay for Life co-presidents seniors Allison Doami and Lauren Irwin have been planning this event for most of this year after raising over $50,000 last year.
“Each team must consist of six students, and they must each raise $100 to stay overnight,” Doami said. “It is a great opportunity to come together to celebrate all those affected by cancer and fight for a common cause.”
On the morning of May 30, an opening ceremony will take place to honor cancer survivors with medals. A guest speaker will also talk about the inspiration behind the event.
In addition, there will be a closing ceremony on May 31 where special awards for teams that competed in games will be announced.
“It is a memorable and fun event that makes a difference in something that affects everyone in some way,” Irwin said. “Our motto for this event is to celebrate, remember and fight back.”
