In the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation, the Mustangs (22-5) swept the Servite Friars (19-11) at home winning 25-21, 25-17, and 25-13.
Costa had a slow start finding themselves down the start of the first match due to hitting the ball out a lot. However, the Mustangs bounced back with the help of senior Declan Wright’s jump serve and junior Jackson Wedbush’s hitting winning, 25-21.
“We had a bit of shaky start, hitting a lot of balls,” Wedbush said. “Once we got into the flow of the game we really got our offense going.”
After a big run at the end of the first game, the Mustang’s momentum carried into the next match. With a strong lead of the Servite, their head coach, Matthew Marrujo called two timeouts in hopes of slowing Costa down. The Mustangs finished 25-17.
“We carried that fire and intensity from the first match into the second,” junior libero Sam Jones said. “We did a great job offensively which really help us win.”
In the third and final match, the Mustangs continued their run finding themselves up early in the game. The Mustangs carried a steady lead the entire match ending 25-13 when the Servite missed a serve.
“We executed perfectly in the last match,” Wedbush said. “We played great and was a great opportunity to let other players play.”
Costa will battle at Newbury Park in the third round of California Interscholastic Federation.
“We really need to work on our overpasses,” Jones said. “We need to gear up and get ready for the next round.”
