Best Coast’s new album proves the band is living up to its name and might actually be the “best” rock band on the west “coast.”
“California Nights” is full of riveting indie rock songs with smooth rhythms and endless catchy hooks. The band experiments with a new, heavier sound that incorporates powerful vocals and emotional lyrics, making the album both personal and dynamic, creating an overall rock masterpiece.
Best Coast is an American rock band based in Los Angeles. The duo consists of songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Bethany Cosentino and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno. “California Nights” is the duo’s third studio album since their last EP, “Fade Away” in 2013. Their 2010 album, “Crazy for You,” was ranked number 36 on the Billboard 200 List and number 10 on Digital Albums.
With the help of producer Wally Gagel, the band’s experimentation with a new and improved indie-rock sound strays away from the more alternative sound of their past albums. The band incorporates feelings of nostalgia and dreaming in their lyrics and every song has equally impressive vocals along with toe-tapping drums.
One of the most notable tracks on the album is “Unaware,” which features heavy guitar synths and progressive beats, as Cosentino’s voice glides through the dramatic harmonies created by Bruno’s skillful drumming. Another profound song is “Feeling Ok” which includes compelling beats and a catchy chorus.
The band has moved away from its former beachy vibe and become heavier and darker, but its hooks make the songs even more memorable than those in Best Coast’s past albums. In “Jealousy,” Cosentino belts personal, sing-along lyrics such as “Why don’t you like me, what’s with the jealousy?”
“Run Through My Head” is a heartbreaking ballad with riveting guitar and drums that exemplifies Cosentino’s dominate vocals as she sings, “It’s a mystery why you ever left.” The song’s catchy chorus over its captivating beats make it one of the most alluring songs on the album.
Additionally, the album’s often melancholic lyrics combine with its electrifying instruments to make it even more relatable to listeners. Cosentino’s compelling vocals sing about every aspect of life, such as yearning for adventures and heartbreak.
The track “Fading Fast” is a spirited song filled with psychedelic synths and dynamic guitar. It is much more upbeat than the rest of the album with lighthearted melodies. This experimentation with a more lively sound highlights the band’s ability to change up its music.
Overall, “California Nights” impressively displays the band’s skills in both vocals and lyric writing. The album is extremely well-produced and creates a new, less beachy sound for the band. Gripping hooks and flowing rhythms dominate every song, making it an unforgettable album.
“California Nights” was released on May 4th and the album is sold digitally and in retail for $9.99.
