In the third round of the California Interscholastic Federation, the Mustangs played at Newbury Park in high tension game, winning, 3-1.
After losing to the Panthers earlier in the season 3-2, the Mustangs came out winning the first game 25-22. The two teams went back and forth throughout the game. Tied 22-22, Costa went on a run winning with the help of Roy McFarland’s serves.
“We came out in the first game with lots of intensity,” junior outside Roy McFarland said. “We did a great job of finishing the game with our run at the end.”
In the following game, the Panthers bounced back winning 25-23. The teams continued to go back and forth going on short sporadic spurts of points. In the end, Newbury Park went on a short run.
“We did a bad job covering their hitters,” junior libero Sam Jones said. “They went on a solid run at the end and we had trouble stopping it.”
In the third game Costa retaliated and held a steady lead the entire game. Newbury Park was unable to comeback and the Mustangs won 25-19.
“We did a great job of holding the lead the entire game,” Jones said. “After some a poor performance in the second we did a good job of bounced back.”
In the final round, the Panthers fought back but came up short, losing 29-27. The teams went back and forth until it was 27-27. The opposing team accused of Mcfarland of touching the net, resulting in the player receiving a red card. Then the coach got in an argument and received another red, losing the game.
“When they started arguing with referee it gave us an easy win,” junior opposite Jackson Wedbush said.
On Tuesday the Mustangs battle at Huntington. Last time they played Huntington won 3-0 with the help of their outside TJ Defalco.
“After getting swept by them last time we need to make sure to really bring it,” Jones said.
