Mayweather vs. Pacquiao; these two boxing legends were supposed to make history by producing one of the best fights in the history of boxing, but instead made history of a different note by producing one of the worst fights in the history of boxing last Saturday.

Overly hyped events these days often times end in pathetic disappointment, and this fight succeeded in following this principle. This fight had been anticipated for the last decade; promoters for the fight were calling it “Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather vs. Manny ‘the Senator’ Pacquiao;” “the Fight of the Century.” A more-fitting title would have been “the Disappointment of the Century.”

This fight was extremely boring in every sense of the word. A short summary of the fight would consist of Mayweather running around the ring constantly, Pacquiao failing to attack Floyd, and worse yet, 12 rounds of this. Floyd is a fighter known for his impenetrable defense, and Pacquiao is a fighter known for his relentless onslaught, and when put on paper, these two fighters appear to be a complete match for each other. This fight was nothing like it appeared on paper.

This fight was terrible in almost every way. Apart from what was mentioned above, these two professionals were also paid the highest salary any sports player has ever been paid in the history of sports for one single event. Mayweather received a whopping ~$180 million, and Pacquiao received a gruesome ~$100 million. The fight also set records in every other category relating to price. Ring side seats for this fight were a record $180,000, the worst seats for this fight were a record $1,500, and to even watch the fight via pay-per-view one had to spend a record $100. In the end, the high prices were not worth it, as the fight disappointed in almost every regard.

The stats for this fight were also mildly terrible, to say the least. The average boxer throws around 50 punches per round. Floyd averages around 39 punches per round, and Pacquiao averages around 66 punches per round. In this fight, Floyd threw more punches than Manny did, and also landed a lot more punches than Manny did. Floyd threw 435 punches and landed 148 of them, while Manny threw 429 punches, and landed only 81 of them. Pac-Man’s team said Manny threw less punches because he had a sore shoulder during the fight, and wasn’t allowed to get an injection to help before the fight.

It is unclear whether both boxers chose to not fight to the best of their abilities because they both knew the insane amounts of money they were making regardless of the outcome of the fight, or if both were just too cautious of the other to actually try to go on the offensive. Overall, this overly hyped fight was nothing more than a horrendous bore.

The Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight aired on May 2nd on HBO PPV for $100.
