Mira Costa’s improvisational team, Comedy Sportz, is practicing for its Seniors vs. Seniors match and Alumni Match which will take place May 22 and June 12 in Mira Costa’s small auditorium.
To score an improv game, whichever team with the most claps at the end of each individual game receives 5 points which adds to the ending score.
“The Comedy Sportz season has so far been so much fun,” Team member Layne Eichenlaub said. “I can’t wait for the next couple of matches at the end of the year. I have had so much fun with the team this year.”
The Josyln Community Center’s senior citizen activities club will compete against Comedy Sportz. The Comedy Sportz team was approached by drama teacher Carol Mathews about the idea of having a match between the senior citizen improv team that is part of the activities club.
“I am so excited for the Seniors vs. Seniors match because this is the first time we have done something of this sort,” Team co-captain Charlie Durham said. “Even though the name implies that only seniors will be playing, all Comedy Sportz members can participate.”
The second match that Comedy Sportz is preparing for is the Alumni match. This match is between past Comedy Sportz alumni members and the current Comedy Sportz team. The alumni players will conduct separate practices from the current Comedy Sportz team.
“I am super excited to see alumni from Comedy Sportz play against us in the upcoming match,” Team member Jack Drinker said. “It will be so cool to see if they still can compete with improv and I hope that they see Comedy Sportz’ progress as a team at Costa.”
To prepare for Seniors vs. Seniors, the Comedy Sportz team will practice at the Josyln Community Center once a week until the match. The team will teach improv by practicing skits and games. The alumni will hold separate matches from the Comedy Sportz team prior to the match.
“I am super excited for these matches,” Durham said. “In June, Sarah [Colen] and I will be announcing the new team leaders and I think that these matches will be great and a fun way to lead up to those exciting announcements.”
