Boys lacrosse lost in the first round of California Interscholastic Federation to Thousand Oaks High School on May 5 in an away game. The Mustangs lost the game, 10-9.

In the first half, Costa’s offense took control by creating plays that allowed them to move the ball forward. The Mustangs were up 7-5 at the end of the half, with goals by juniors Zane Crandall, Nash Hale and sophomore Casey Bonner.

“We played with a sense of unity, and our offense started to flow smoothly during the first half,” Crandall said.

In the second half, Thousand Oaks was able to keep the ball, and Costa’s offense dropped back to help the defense defend against Thousand Oaks attacks. This led to Costa not having a way to move the ball up the field when it had possession of the ball.

“We did not have much of an attack in the second half,” Crandall said. “When we finally gained possession, we could not find an outlet to get the ball forward.”

Although the Mustangs were able to create some scoring opportunities in an attempt to keep up with Thousand Oaks, Costa’s defense was unable to put a stop to their attacks. The end score was 10-9, with Costa taking the loss.

“I think we learned a lot from this game defensively that we can use to our advantage in the future,” junior goalkeeper John Vansickle said. ”We should have prepared more for CIF because we had what it took to be a top contender this season.”

The Mustangs had an overall record of 9-7 and a Bay League record of 2-6.

“It was definitely a tough loss for us,” Vansickle said. “Now, all we can focus on is improving for next year.”
