A committee of Manhattan Beach Unified School District vice principals and teachers, led by Executive Director of Educational Services Carolyn Seaton, voted Mira Costa Video Production and Broadcast Journalism teacher Michael Hernandez MBUSD Teacher of the Year and announced the award at the June 3 Board of Trustees meeting.
According to Costa Principal Ben Dale, the committee chose Hernandez for District Teacher of the Year because of his technological gifts and positive impact on his peers.
“Innovative, creative, visionary,” Dale said. “It’s difficult to find the superlative that best describes Michael Hernandez as an educator. He is a once-in-a-generation talent and mind.”
The other seven teachers nominated include David Barakat of Meadows Elementary; Gelane Cameron of Pacific Elementary; Jessica Duenas of Manhattan Beach Preschool; Patti Ortega of Robinson Elementary; Marianne Slater of Grand View Elementary; Michelle Syverson of Pennekamp Elementary and Barbara Umanoff of Manhattan Beach Middle School.
“The other teachers are all very deserving of the award as well,” Hernandez said. “I hope that I can do justice of this award.”
