The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees will host a public hearing on the MBUSD 2015-16 budget at the Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday.
According to Assistant Superintendent Dr. Dawnalyn Murakawa-Leopard, the 2015-16 budget will fund professional development and additional staffing more than the 2014-15 budget did.
“MBUSD is considering whether additional staffing is needed to support our students and programs as well as ongoing maintenance and technology needs for all sites throughout the district,” Murakawa-Leopard said. “We, like all districts, are facing increased costs for employee retirement benefits as well as medical benefits.”
According to Murakawa-Leopard, the California state legislature must finalize its budget talks and send it to Governor Jerry Brown. Once Brown approves the final state budget for public education, MBUSD will have definite information regarding the amount of funding available for next year.
“Once the Governor signs the budget act into law, we will know what funding we can expect,” Murakawa-Leopard said. “I am optimistic about our ability to build a budget that will reflect our financial stability. After it is finalized, we can begin planning for next year.”
