The English Department released two new summer reading lists that students will utilize this summer and be used for assignments during the 2015-16 school year.
One summer reading list names books that incoming freshmen and sophomores must choose from, while the other list has books for incoming juniors and seniors. The lists’ books are young adult reading selections from the literary recognition Printz Award and the Alex Award lists.
“The Department wanted to provide students with a list that better represents their interests, and these titles do this better,” English Department chair Jonathan Westerberg said. “We also changed the assignments for students in order to make the writing students do more meaningful and useful.”
The new summer reading assignments will be the same for all grades, replacing the current assignments English teachers give to students at the beginning of the school year.
“Hopefully, the shift is positive,” Westerberg said. “The new assessment was generated within the department and was created to represent the wishes of the majority of its teachers. We will reassess the program and make adjustments on an annual basis if they are necessary.”
