At Mira Costa’s June 1 All Awards Ceremony, Costa administration and staff awarded juniors and seniors for their academic achievements.
Drama teacher Carol Mathews and English teacher John Heideman were the masters of ceremony. A total of 100 awards was given to students, such as book and departmental awards.
“The ceremony is held to honor kids who have worked really hard in their junior and senior years and pursued their goals,” Costa Vice Principal Deborah Hofreiter said. “It is such a great ceremony and really fun for both students and staff.”
There were 21 valedictorians who received all As in their four years at Costa and 10 salutatorians who received all As and one B. Additionally, juniors with all As received the Charlaine Deatherage Award.
“I am very happy I made it through high school with straight As,” valedictorian senior Sarah Kohrogi said. “This has been my goal since I first came to Costa and I’m so proud of it all.”
According to Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale, the recipient of the Student of the Year award is chosen based on his or her academics, extracurricular activities and community service. Educational council members selected senior Derek Zeoli out of other nominees including seniors Ryan Cosner, Reilly Edmonds, Lauren Irwin and Mai Nojima.
“All five kids were tremendous; it is that way every year with the Student of the Year award,” Dale said. “It’s a heart warming experience to see everyone be awarded. Derek truly embodies the ideas behind Mira Costa.”
