The Mira Costa baseball team faced off against Northwood High School in a home game for the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation on May 21. The Mustangs played 10 innings, and the game ended with Costa losing, 3-1.
Senior Michael Rumpp pitched six innings and allowed one run. Junior Trevor Franklin and freshman Jesse Story split up the later four innings.
“Our pitchers were incredible,” junior catcher Brett Davis said. “They brought so much to our team and contributed to all of our success this season.”
During the third inning, junior outfielder Reese Alexiades scored for the Mustangs, making the score 1-0.
“We played well in the game, but we were not able to pull out a win, which happens to every team at some point,” Alexiades said.
The Mustangs were able to keep a lead until the top of the sixth inning when the Timberwolves tied up the game with a base hit, bringing the runner at third home. The game remained tied throughout the seventh inning, causing the game to go into extra innings.
“We made some defensive mistakes, and the other team capitalized on that,” Davis said. “We played some great baseball, and this is something I will remember for the rest of my life.”
In the tenth inning, the Timberwolves scored two runs, ending Costa’s season and the game with a score of 3-1. The Mustangs finished off their season with an overall record of 23-8 and a Bay League record of 8-2.
“I think that we played a good game, but some things just didn’t go our way today,” Franklin said. “It never feels good to go out with a loss to a team we could have beaten, but, nevertheless, we had an incredible season.”
