Mira Costa Vice Principal Ian Drummond will resign from his position on Friday, Aug 21, in order to accommodate his new position as the Principal of Richardson Middle School in South Torrance for this coming school year.

Currently, Drummond is balancing his positions at both Richardson and Costa. However, after Friday, he will be working full-time at Richardson. At Costa, he is continuing to work with the Guidance Counselors and other Costa administrators to organize, correct and finalize students’ schedules for the school year.

“Right now, it’s a crazy time with schedule changes and I’m trying to do as much as I can to aid with that process,” Drummond said. “It’s hard to try to be in two places at once. In the mornings, I am at Costa to aid with schedule changes. Later in the day, I head over to Richardson to do some work over there in preparation for the school year.”

Drummond officially accepted the position after his Monday, Aug 17 interview with Torrance Unified School District Board Members and Superintendent Dr. George Mannon. Soon after, he formally notified Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale and Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews of his leave.

“This decision came very quickly,” Drummond said. “For me, this is not ideal. Timing wise, I can’t control that part. I would prefer that this happened earlier in the summer, but this opportunity presented itself and it’s time for me to become a principal.”

According to Dale, Costa administration is currently making arrangements to fill the position and hopes to have a smooth transition between vice principals, prior to the start of the school year.

“The district has issued a secondary vice principal position,” Dale said. “From there, we’ll see if we have any internal candidates. If we do, we’ll look at those internal candidates first, and, if not, we’ll look outside.”

Drummond is preparing an official statement to send to Costa staff members, notifying them of his leave. He expects to release it within a few days.

“I’m excited about this opportunity,” Drummond said. “It’s a conflicted mix of emotions. I am very much part of Costa and I consider this to be my home, so it’s difficult to leave home in order to advance in my career. I am very thankful to have been a part of Costa for the past three years. We have awesome kids here who are doing amazing things, and hopefully I made a positive difference.”
