Mira Costa is in the top one percent of public high schools in the nation, as published by Newsweek and U.S. News.
Out of the 500 highest nationally-ranked schools, Newsweek gave Costa a ranking of 341. Newsweek ranked schools on a college readiness index that was based on college enrollment rates, graduation rates, weighted Advanced Placement composite scores, weighted Scholastic Aptitude Test and American College Testing composite scores, student retention rates and student-to-counselor ratios. Costa received a college readiness index of 78.3, with a graduation rate of 99.3% and a college enrollment rate of 84.7%.
“Hopefully Costa students appreciate what an honor it is to attend one of the top one percent of high scoops in the Nation,” Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale said. “So many kids would do anything to be here with them. I see so many great kids on this campus so I’m not surprised at the ranking.”
In the U.S. News ranking, Costa is listed as number 375 among all 21,000 public high schools across the country. U.S. News awarded Costa with a gold medal distinction for being in the top 500 schools. Costa received a college readiness index of 57.6 and an academic performance index of 912. In ranking schools, U.S. News gathered information from a survey based on standardized state testing scores and how prepared students were for college.
“Mira Costa has done a fantastic job of expanding AP offerings,” Matthews said. “Our college attendance rate has risen slightly over the last few years and our graduation rate is very high.”
