Mira Costa’s football team fought hard last Friday against the Torrance Tartars in its first game of the season with fans cheering wildly excited for the season to come. Mira costa is 1-0 after its first game of the season.

Mira Costa started strong in their first quarter of the season scoring 28 points to come to an early lead. With great throws by new starting quarterback junior David Arredondo, Costa had no problem putting points on the board.

“I feel we executed our game plan as we wanted to and our Offensive line gave me time to think and make the right play,” Arredondo said. “With the Offensive line giving me enough time to do my job on the field and the receivers doing their job and us being on the same page lead to us gaining an early lead.”

The team stopped any progression on their defensive half. This kept Torrance from getting past the 50-yard line, let alone scoring any touchdowns. With strong cornerbacks and a great defensive line, the Mustangs continued to get the ball back on offense, which kept the pressure strong on Torrance.

“We played smart defense and had good tackling which kept them from moving the ball forward,” junior cornerback Blake Snyder said.

In the second quarter with the team performing well, the team continued to score touchdowns and play strong defensively with a sack and recovered many balls from fumbles started by Torrance players. By the end of the second quarter, running back senior Omar Morrison had three touchdowns.

“Even though I helped by carrying the ball, I give most of the credit to the offensive linemen, as they did a great job and it wouldn’t have gone as smooth as it did without them,” Morrison said.

Going into the second half with a 41 point lead, Coach Don Morrow felt confident enough to pull out the starters and let the second string players play to get them ready for more games later down the road.

“It’s always good to get second string players in the game because you need them ready to replace someone if he gets injured, so it was a good idea to put them in so they can be prepared to play in later games,” junior slot receiver Chris Brown said.

Going into the last quarter of the game, Costa still had a 49-point lead. While the Mustangs did not score in the final quarter of the game, Torrance only scored eight points, ending the game 55-14. Additionally, they are playing away at at La Serna High School on Thursday September 9th.

“Since our next game is earlier in the week, we have to work a faster pace and be ready to play earlier than usual,” Coach Don Morrow said.
