Girl’s volleyball: Mustangs vs. Sailors – Video

The Mira Costa girls’ volleyball team took on their long-time rivals, the Marymount Sailors, on Sept. 10. The Mustangs came into this match undefeated in preseason tournaments and winning their first regular season game against Edison.

Costa began dominating the game with a lead from junior Britt Bomber who was able to dominate at the front of the net with her kills. Bomber continued to lead the Mustangs in the first set by once again being strong at the net and getting a block to stop Marymount’s offense from advancing and closing up the first set at a 25-12 victory.

The second set began with dominance by Costa once again with help from senior Ashley Anselmo’s kills early in the game. Error’s from the Sailors offense gave Costa momentum. Sophomore Piper Monk gave the Mustangs their last push and senior Alexa Underwood had the set-winning kill to end the second set at 25-17.

Underwood and Monk started the third set the same way with one kill each to give the sets first points. It seemed as if Costa had started to run out of a gas a bit because the Sailors were able to get some kills on their defense and cut Costa’s lead. Depth in Costa’s lineup proved efficient because they were able to pull away from Marymount with help from senior Emma Smith’s ace. Junior Hannah Scott decided it was enough and has a powerful kill to end the game and complete the sweep in a 25-15 victory.
