Mira Costa choir teacher Michael Hayden began Costa’s first All Men’s Choir at the beginning of this school year.
Hayden said the All Men’s Choir was created after 24 male students showed interest last spring during choir placements.
“The All Men’s Choir is better for teaching because the vocal pedagogy that you teach a singer is different for each gender,” Hayden said. “I have been teaching both genders together, but when I realized I had enough men to create the Men’s Choir, I did. After hearing all the singers and seeing how the membership was for this year’s groups, I realized we were ready to create a Men’s choir because we had the correct amount of men to form this group.”
The Men’s Choir is the second single-gender course offered at Costa, after the All Women’s Choir. Choir members are currently rehearsing for the Dec. 17 Winter Concert.
“Everyone loves a men’s choir. It is a very cool thing and I kept telling the guys that and that they are the very first members of the Mira Costa Men’s Choir and that is something very big. It is going to be something in our concerts when I announce them as the Mira Costa men’s choir. People are going to cheer and that is because the majority of all one gender choirs are women, so this is very new and less common than an all women’s choir. It is something very exciting and big.”
