Teenagers everywhere are joking about “dropping fire mix tapes,” but little do they know there is a lot more work to the art; just ask senior Raquel Gerard.

During her summer, Gerard began working for former Costa student KC Campbell, the founder and owner of VOX DJs based in Manhattan Beach.

Campbell noticed Gerard this past year at Sandpiper Junior’s annual senior banquet when she created a slideshow for the event that Campbell was working as a DJ for. According to Campbell, what caught his attention was the fact that she showed up an hour early to make sure her project would run smoothly.

“Raquel is hardworking, conscientious, and she has very high standards that she sets for herself,” Raquel Gerard’s mother, Elsa Gerard, said.

According to Campbell, Gerard’s dedication to her slide show was enough for him to offer her job on the spot without an interview. She now works for the administrative side of VOX DJs, getting things organized and ready for events.

“I do everything from making playlists for Campbell’s upcoming events, to making photo collages of his past events so he can send them out to his clients as a wrap-up of the event,” Gerard said.

According to Gerard, she likes working at VOX DJs because she has always loved music, so she enjoys making playlists for the company.

“Creating playlists and listening to music is a personal release after a stressful day,” Gerard said.

Gerard’s family members are particularly excited about the opportunities that have opened up to her

“I encouraged Raquel to take this position because I thought it was a great opportunity for her to do things she enjoys, to learn new skills, and have fun,” Elsa Gerard said.

Working with VOX DJs allows Gerard flexibility and ability to schedule her own work hours in order to work around any conflicts that may arise during the week.

“If I have a conflict, we can work together to get around it, so I can still get my tasks done,” Gerard said.

Typically, Gerard works at VOX DJs for three days a week for roughly two hours at a time. Gerard plans to continue working for VOX DJs until she goes off to college.

“My favorite part about working for VOX DJs is learning about how a business operates,” Gerard said.

In the future Gerard wishes to be a business major and knows that working with VOX DJs is a great opportunity to prepare herself for her future.

“My job allows me to see what the real world work is like,” said Gerard. “I’m learning how to do a variety of things that I wouldn’t have learned elsewhere.”
