On Saturday, at Dockweiler Beach, the Mustangs suffered their first lost this season to the hands of their rival, Redondo. Costa lost two of the three matches in the game. Their only win was earned by sophomores Dane Johnson and Ethan Shinn.
Johnson and Shinn lost the first game 19-21, but prevailed in the last two, winning them 2-16 and 16-14. Shinn scored a total of 15 kills in the game. According to Shinn, the team lacked focus throughout the match, but next time, they will come back even stronger.
“Unfortunately, as a team, we didn’t get the result we were looking for, but Johnson and I played well as a team,” Shinn said. “Even though we lost the first set, we knew if we focused and played hard till the end, we would win the match.”
Next weekend, the Mustangs will have a rematch against Notre Dame and Palos Verdes. In their last appearances, Costa defeated both schools, but according to Johnson if they train hard and prepare, they will defeat them once again. Costa now moves to 6-1 in bay league, hoping to continue winning.
“As long as we train hard and keep a positive mentality, we will have a great chance of winning further matches,” Johnson said.
