Mira Costa’s boys water polo team was defeated, 12-5, in a non-conference game against Dana Hills High School at home Saturday, with a top performance from junior attacker Christian Thornton.
The Mustangs put up a fight but ultimately were overmatched by the number four-ranked team in Orange County. Thornton provided a solid effort with three goals, but in the end, Mira Costa was unable to keep the defense tight, leading to many chances for Dana Hills to score.
“Christian did a great job with the chances he got today,” junior attacker Garrett Weatherly said. “In the future, we need to tighten up on defense.”
Costa’s overall record fell to 8-4, but the Mustangs remain undefeated in Bay League at 3-0. The next game is at home against Palos Verdes High School on Wednesday. According to junior attacker Mark Warneke, the team remains optimistic and is eager to play its rival.
“Dana Hills is a solid team that we should have no shame in losing to,” Warneke said. “If anything, this game only makes us more prepared for Bay League and the rest of the season.”
