The Mustangs swept rival Palos Verdes High School winning 14 of 18 games.
The girls tennis team took on Palos Verdes High School in a home game on Tuesday. The Mustangs won 14-4.
“Palos Verdes has an accomplished tennis team, and I am very proud that we pulled through on Tuesday’s match,” coach Joe Casulli said.
The Mustangs were initially tied due to victories by Amy Gaal, Isabelle Lau, and doubles partners, freshman Lindsay Giese and junior Lena Nagy. Two more wins by Gaal, three by junior doubles partners Katarina and Isabella Draskovic, and a final win by Jackie Soliman and Maddie Giese allowed Costa to be able to win the game.
“We had a shaky start due to nerves,” Nagy said. “As the game progressed, we all gained our confidence and started to play.”
In the first game of the day, Gaal’s strong serves and returns lead to her landslide victory. At the end of the game, Gaal sliced the ball over the net winning the set, 6-0, and putting Costa in the lead 1-0.
“I was really proud of my performance and was very successful when scoring the necessary points,” Gaal said.
In the sixth game of the day, Lindsay Giese and Nagy lost their first set 1-0 due to a lack of communication. The girls made a comeback and after a volley, the players earned the last point to win their set, 6-1, and tie Costa and PV, 3-3.
“I was pleased with Giese and Nagy’s performance,” Casulli said. “The two got close to the net whenever possible, which is a perfect example of how tennis should be played.”
In the tenth game of the day, the Draskovics crushed their opponents, 6-0, and making Costa’s score, 7-3. Katarina Draskovic hit the ball onto the corner of the court earning the twins a point in the fourth set.
“Every time my sister and I play a game, we get better and today’s game was no exception,” Katarina Draskovic said.
Maddie Giese and Soliman won 6-0 in the last set of the day. Soliman hit the ball through her opponent’s legs, tying the score 30 all in the sixth game. The girls won the game for Costa, 14-4.
“Giese and I got to the net and communicated well and overall played an impressive game,” Soliman said.
The Mustangs are currently 6-1 in Bay League and 16-2 overall. The team’s next match is a non-Bay League match against Corona Del Mar in a home game on Wednesday.
“I am confident that we will do great on Wednesday,” Casulli said.
