Manhattan Beach is implementing downtown renovations and repairs under the Downtown Crosswalk Replacement and Slurry Seal Project.

The project includes the removal of deteriorated blue tiled crosswalks, which will be replaced with a new blue asphalt tile pattern and the renovation of worn out sidewalks, curbs and gutters in the downtown vicinity. The project also implements minor street repairs.

“The streetscape has a non-uniform, poorly maintained appearance,” Manhattan Beach City Council member David  Lesser said. “Many of the blue tiles in the crosswalks have cracked, and a number have broken loose.”

Total expenditures for the Downtown Crosswalk Replacement added up to over $900,000. Excel Paving Company has set Nov. 13 as the expected renovation finish date.

“The [Downtown Crosswalk Replacement] work is disruptive to Downtown businesses and customers, but it has been timed between the end of the busy summer months and before the holidays,” Lesser said.

Manhattan Beach is also undergoing construction for the Water Main Replacement Project, which includes the replacement of 10,090 feet of iron pipes in 12 streets around the city. The project will include the construction of new pipe valves and iron pipes in underground water city-wide transportation systems.

“Replacing and upgrading underground water mains has been a priority for this and prior city councils,” Lesser said. “The goal is to avoid unanticipated water line breaches.”

The estimated cost for the Water Main Replacement Project is $3 million, and construction will end April of next year. Manhattan Beach is also preparing further renovations to improve the city’s streetscape.

“After the construction of the new water main, residents will have a more reliable and efficient water delivery system,” Manhattan Beach city engineer Joe Parco said. “[This will create] fewer disruptions as a result of water main breaks and leaks.”
