Staff Ed: Summer school tuition improves facilities, programs

The money raised through MB/X summer school is spent on upgrading the extracurricular facilities at Mira Costa. These funds are a necessity as they not only beautify the campus, but they make the school’s internal environment more advantageous for students as well.

According to the MB/X website, MB/X, its stakeholders and its partners have funded various campus improvements and facility upgrades since 2003, such as resurfacing the  Waller Stadium track and installing turf fields on the west edge of Costa’s campus. They have also funded renovations to Fisher Gym, which include restorations to the lobby and installation of a new scoreboards, flooring, lighting and skylights, and the installations of  synthetic turf into the field at Waller Stadium.

According to MBUSD treasurer Jennifer Williams, MB/X administers summer school at Costa because the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation does not receive funding from the state of California to provide students with necessary classes. Since public schools provide free education, it is necessary for summer courses to be funded by this non-profit entity.

According to the MBX website, each semester-long course is $275, and two semester-long courses are $550. Families should be encouraged to pay these funds as they are being put toward matters that will not only benefit Costa as a whole, but each individual student as well.  With this additional financing, students are prospering as the environment in which they come to learn everyday is improving around them.

As stated by Williams, it takes several years to raise enough funds for large projects. Over the summer, MB/X spent $2.265 million toward resurfacing the track at Waller Stadium and completing multi-purpose field project on the west side of campus to be completed later this school year. According to the MBX site, installing turf fields will provide additional game facilities for team sports. This additional field space will ensure that all teams are provided with the necessary space to practice with more ease than before.

Costa parents also prosper from the funds. According to the MB/X website,  summer school tuition helped pay for the implementation of the drug testing program. With this examination, Costa is able to help parents feel more at ease as it makes them more aware of the potential drug activity of their children. Therefore, summer school tuition is a necessity that not only benefits the students’ learning environment, but their morality as a whole.

MB/X effectively uses summer school funds to refurbish the facilities at Costa, as well as improve extra-curricular programs and provide extra academic programs.  Therefore, with many more improvements to be made on the Costa campus, MB/X summer school funds are a necessity.
