The Mira Costa Marching Band will compete on Saturday in a field show at Kennedy High School’s Glover Stadium in La Palma after placing third at the Sept. 26 South Bay Invitational at West Torrance High School.

The Invitational was the first competition of the Marching Band season. Costa’s percussion and colorguard each had separate performances and placed first for their shows. Costa’s Marching Band placed third overall.

“The competition went very well, and everyone really gave it their all, which led to it being one of the strongest first shows we have had,” Band president senior Lauren Koch said.

Front Ensemble leader Samantha Banchik stated that the band excelled in musicality, and colorguard performed timely with the music. However, she hopes to increase communication among members.

“The number-one thing we could improve on is focusing,” Banchik said. “Through learning to be more focused, we can harness in on individual errors, which often contribute to our overall score.”

According to Koch, band members are focusing on perfecting their basic marching techniques, as well as expanding the use of body movement  during shows.

“This show is set at a new and higher degree for us visually, and that has caused us to forget our foundation,” Drum Major junior Adrian Yu said. “We are really excited to be able to perform our entire show.”

At the Kennedy competition, the band will perform a new percussion segment, lengthening its performance, in addition to the full Marching Band show.

“It is great that we are rating as high as we are,” Band director Joel Carlson said. “We have to clean up a lot of elements of the show and make it more precise and perfected. Right now, we are practicing and tightening up things [to] do them better.”
