The Mira Costa Comedysportz team released their new team roster on Sept. 25th after holding tryouts for prospective Mira Costa students earlier in the week.

Around 60 people tried out with only thirteen making the team. The new additions to the improv team includes three freshmen, four sophomores, two juniors, and three seniors.

“It was difficult sculpting a team from so many choices. When it came down to it, the people who were the most dedicated and most willing to be taught made it,” Comedysportz president Miranda Baldo said.

The auditions consisted of a four person straight scene that lasted for four minutes. Following the straight scene was the 185 pun game where students improv puns off of a given word.

“The straight scene reveals if the people trying out understand basic scene structure and the basic rules of improv while the pun game lets auditioners have a chance at being witty and impressing the team with their puns and intelligence,” Baldo said.

Current comedysportz team members decided who made the team. According to Miranda Baldo, qualities they looked for in prospective members I included people who were adaptable, followed the rules of the game, and those who made not only themselves, but others look good as well.

“Each of the newbies retained more than one of these qualities and had dynamic characters and illustrated their understanding for improv in the scenes they created,” Baldo said.

New additions to the team will get to go to upcoming Comedysportz competitions as well as train with the team. The group conducts practices each week to prepare for future competitions.

“It is a great opportunity that not a lot of people have the chance to get, so knowing that makes me grateful that I can be part of something so fun and amazing,” sophomore Toby Kamish said.”

Costa’s Comedysportz team has their first competition of the season in the small auditorium on Oct. 8th. In addition, the Comedysportz will be involved in another competition on October 4th.

“We had GameCon which is basically an assembly of all the other Comedysportz teams in the high school league and we will play improv games with all the other schools,” Kamish said.
