Mira Costa’s cross country team participated in its second Bay League meet of the season against Redondo, Palos Verdes and Peninsula at Polliwog Park on Thursday. The boys placed first, and the girls placed third with senior Ty Garrett and junior Melia Chittenden as the top performers.
Garrett placed third overall with a time of 15:33, and Chittenden came in second overall with a time of 17:41. The runners decided to conserve energy in the beginning, enabling them to sprint at the end of the race. According to Chittenden, the girls placed lower than they had expected.
“This was a really great race for us, and I’m proud of our whole team,” Chittenden said. “I know the girls could have done better, but considering the competition level in Bay League, I’m happy with the results.”
The Mustangs’ next meet is the Mount Sac Invitational taking place at the Mount Sac course on Oct. 24. The girls are currently 0-2 in Bay League and the boys are 2-0. According to junior runner Austin Lamb, the upcoming meet will be challenging for the Mustangs.
“I think we will do well because our varsity team is projected to do well in state and our junior varsity team is better than most varsity teams,” Lamb said.
