Move aside “Gossip Girl” because the new horror series “Scream Queens” has taken over TV.
From the producers of “American Horror Story” and “Glee,” “Scream Queens” is a new twist on the popular horror genre. This comedic horror series debuted on September 22, with new episodes premiering every Tuesday.
This new series on Fox creates laughter as well as suspense and introduces many questionable and humorous characters. Many characters give clues to help the viewer find out who the killer school mascot, the Red Devil is.
Kappa Kappa Tau or KKT, the most elite sorority on campus, is targeted by a serial killer disguised as the Red Devil. Trying to figure out who the Red Devil is bonds the KKT sorority members and pledges together as they try to undercover the real killer.
A number of characters have at least one trait that makes the viewer question if she or he is the Red Devil, and some of these spend their time trying to figure out who the serial killer could be. “Scream Queens” characters include, the “Queen Bee”, the “Ghetto Girl”, the “Taylor Swift Fan,” and many more with equally unique nicknames.
A multitude of characters in “Scream Queens” are played by well-known actors such as Emma Roberts and Lea Michele. Each character in the new television show brings humor to the shows somewhat frightening premise such as Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts) and Zayday Williams (KeKe Palmer) who always have an entertaining comment to add to any situation just occurred.
The Red Devil’s homicides are well thought out and executed with realistic blood and gore. The Red Devil is capable of many unique actions, such as turning a simple prank a creative death putting the blame to a popular queen bee. Each homicide becomes more interesting and bizarre which keeps viewers more interested due to the diversity presented.
Other characters are just beyond senseless. For instance, Chanel number 2, one of Chanel’s six minions, wanted to lead all of the sorority pledges into the second floor where the alleged serial killer was. The cliche stupidity to go right to the location of the killer creates a humorous and baffling effect. In addition, the quirky comments and beyond moronic actions of the characters help to lighten the mood and are a welcomed transition from a lot of the gory murders that take place throughout the show.
The plot of the new series is not a creative concept. “Scream Queens” plot is cliche and similar to most horror movies and television shows. A disguised serial killer is on the loose with all characters trying to figure out who or what it is, blaming others and losing their trust because it has been overused by directors many times before. The writers of the show could have been more creative but ended up reusing old concepts with only a slight modern twist.
“Scream Queens,” the slightly horrific new comedy series reveals questionable characters with a not so creative story line.
“Scream Queens” is on Fox at 9pm and is rated TV-14 for suggestive dialogue, language, sexual situations, and violence.
