The Green Inferno proved to be a disappointing movie that focused more on human suffering and torture than it did on more critical aspects, like acting and screenplay.
This “horror” movie did an awful job trying live up to its genre, and ended up being more reminiscent of a horrible violent thriller, only saved by its unique and shocking plot. There are many flaws within, including horrific images, unlikeable characters, and a confusing dialogue.
The story follows a group of college students from New York that decide to go to the Amazon rain forest to protest and stop bulldozers from destroying the forest and native villages.
After the protest, Justine (Lorenza Izzo), and the others fly back home, only to end up in a plane crash over the Amazon and kidnapped by a native tribe. Soon after, the students find out that their situation is much worse than they could have ever imagined, as the survivors are kidnapped by the local tribesmen
The acting in the movie was inadequate, as all of the cast were new, amatuer actors and actresses. The stars did not make their roles as normal college students believable, on another example of a series of bad movie making decisions.
The terrible acting and disturbing scenes were partially masked by the shock factor of the film’s insane plot. The story is one of a kind, and the intense scenes keep the viewer on the edge of their seat.
One of the more apparent bad features of the film is the overly-graphic death and torture scenes. Torture and human suffering are some of the main aspects of the plot, however the way that they are displayed without any censorship is enough to make the strongest moviegoers nauseous, to the point of wanting to walk out of the theater.
The film also contained many small, irrelevant points that did not contribute to the story and made the entire film hard to follow. More than once does the viewer find themselves perplexed after a new romantic relationship is formed or ended. These relationships add nothing to the overall story and make the storyline more complex than it needs to be.
The movie also became confusing at many points. A majority of the movie is spoken in the tribe’s native language, with no subtitles or indications about what the people are saying. This leaves the audience confused and always wondering about what is going on.
Overall, the movie is a distasteful and unsatisfying horror movie, with over-the-top gore scenes and amatuer acting. This movie is not worth the time or money spent watching it.
The Green Inferno is rated R and is playing in theaters nationwide.
