Mira Costa senior Lauren McKenna has started a petition that will be submitted to the Costa administration in an effort to exempt students without fifth or sixth period classes from the second hour of office hours.
As of now, almost 130 seniors have signed this petition. The point of the petition is to notify the administration that many seniors without a fifth or sixth period have after-school activities, including jobs, and sports that take place during the second office hour, McKenna said. Normally, students are able to leave after 12:21 pm.
“I hope that the petition will prove to the administration that many students and parents are upset about this extra hour us students are forced to stay,” McKenna said. “Hopefully, Costa students will support this petition.”
A main reason for the petition is that the office hour schedule was not finalized until the beginning of this school year, McKenna said. Therefore, students who do not have a fifth or sixth period did not know that they would have to leave school after the second office hours every Wednesday that office hours takes place as opposed to 12:21.
“Hopefully the administration will realize the amount of conflicts that are being created and make the second office hour optional for those without a fifth or sixth period,” McKenna said.
