Social media speaker Josh Ochs came to speak to Mira Costa athletes about the positive and negative effects social media can have and how to use social media to student’s benefit in the small theater on Wed. during both office hours.
Ochs began his presentation by mentioning his positive experience using social media to popularize his campaign during the 2009 Hermosa Beach City Council elections and writing his book “Light, Bright, and Polite.” According to Ochs, the reason for the presentation was to inform students about what you should and should not post on social media and how it can help students get into certain college and earn jobs if they have the right attitude.
“I want to give students the information colleges always tell me about and things that they want to see from students,” Ochs said. “But this is not just for colleges, students can get jobs anywhere my team advises, they just need to listen to this presentation.”
Ochs demonstrated how to be positive on social media by comparing the difference between Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift’s types of tweets. He showed examples about how Swift is showing positivity and being supportive whereas Cyrus is rude and lazy.
“Colleges and jobs don’t have time and don’t want to babysit their employees and students,” said Ochs. “They want to make sure that you are a positive addition to their organization.”
