Mira Costa’s girls volleyball defeated its rival, Redondo Union High School, 3-2 Tuesday in its last match before California Interscholastic Federation (CIF)  playoffs, with top performances by junior outside hitter Amanda Montag.

In the first game, Costa scored just enough points to win, 25-23, but in the second and third sets, Costa’s energy declined, losing 25-17 and 25-23. The Mustangs rallied after the losses and edged out Redondo, winning 25-23 and 15-13. According to Montag, this is the best match the Mustangs have played all season.

“We played as a team, and we played for each other,” Montag said. “In practice, we’ve been working hard to stay focused and fight back when games get tight, and today we really showed it.”

The team next plays in its first CIF match of the season on Nov. 24. The team is currently 27-5 overall and 5-1 in Bay League. Montag says that the team has been working on trusting each other no matter what so that they can work together as a team.

“For CIF, our main goal is to keep in mind that we are playing for each other and not just for the ring,” Montag said.
