On the eighth anniversary of September 11, ASB hosted a school-wide remembrance event called Patriot Day which included a tree planting ceremony and moment of silence.
“This year’s Patriot Day was a good way to remember all those who passed in 2001 and the amazing contributions they made to our country,” ASB junior Allie Wisialowski said.
The memorial began at 11:30am in the Rose Garden with a school wide observance including a moment of silence for those that lost their lives. After several moments trumpet players Jason Goussak and Alex Williamson performed Taps in two locations which could be heard around campus.
“I did not attend the service but I did hear the trumpets. I thought the moment of silence was a lot more appropriate then last years activities,” junior Willem Kamoen said.
As the silence ended, ASB Vice President Jeff Whelan led the onlookers in the Pledge of Allegiance. The audience consisted of approximately four to six fourth period classes including Erin Doyle, Paula Bozeman, and Anita Rossell.
“I was grateful to be in one of the few classes that attended the tree planting ceremony. There was so much symbolism behind the simple act. I wish more had the opportunity to attend,” senior Spencer Greller said.
Whelan then said a few words reflecting upon the national tragedy and the symbolism of the strawberry tree ASB planned to plant in memory of the emergency workers and those lost in United Flight 93 and targeted areas.
“This tree will serve as a symbol for the continuing life and growth of our nation, and will grow strong and proud, just as our nation has post 9/11. In 2017 when the current 4th graders of our elementary schools are our age, this tree will stand tall as a symbol and as a lasting reminder of the tragedy which our nation experienced and the sacrifices which our countrymen endured,” Whelan said.
However as a result of maintenance issues ASB was asked to wait several days before planting the actual tree. Manhattan Beach Unified School District board members Joyce Fahey, Amy Howorth, Nancy Hershman, and Ida Vandaport were present to ceremoniously move the dirt.
“Last year we combined the school kick off pep rally and the September 11 remembrance assembly as a result of time issues. This year we held two separate events, and I am pleased with the results of both. The students did an excellent job for only being in session several days,” ASB advisor Lisa Claypoole said.
On September 15th the real tree was planted by students of ASB during fourth and fifth period.
“On the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the student government wanted to remember those who lost their lives in a respectful and somber tone. The tree symbolizes the growth of our nation and the growth Americans will continue to see,” Whelan said.
