During the past two office hours days, teachers from Mira Costa’s Social Studies Department discussed adding new Advanced Placement and Honors course options for the 2015–2016 school year.
Costa History teacher Annie Choi said that the department has not yet approved or discussed any specific courses in depth, though they want to offer these courses to underclassmen, who are not offered as many options for history courses.
“It is a good idea to open more courses in the social studies department to appeal to more students and have various courses to take,” Choi said. “But we have to think of that wisely, because we don’t want to take out students from other programs, like [Model United Nations] for instance.”
In the upcoming weeks’ social studies department meetings, the department will discuss more specific courses and consider other obstacles for these courses.
“I’ve only recently heard about this,” Principal Dr. Ben Dale said. “I think it’s still very early on in the discussions, but the possibility of more courses is exciting.”
