Family secrets are always one of the most riveting subjects of entertainment, but Netflix’s original series “Bloodline” takes it to a new level with murder, lies and heartbreak.

Even though the series  has only released one season, “Bloodline” is one of the most well-produced Netflix original series. The show caters to binge-watchers with intriguing mystery, celebrity-packed cast and an alluring setting.

“Bloodline” is centered around the Rayburn family and its underlying family secrets. The mother (Sissy Spaeck) and father (Sam Shepherd) run a “mom-and-pop” Florida Keys hotel, with help from three of their four children in the Keys, all of whom mysteriously fear the eldest son, Danny.

The pilot episode of the series flawlessly utilizes foreshadowing as the second eldest son, John (Kyle Chandler), performs an introductory monologue, hinting at the terrible events to come.

Furthermore, the mysterious nature of the Rayburn family is integrated throughout the series, as intricate details of the family’s past are slowly revealed through flashbacks. The flashbacks are filmed with a sepia, dream-like filter, emphasizing the contrast between the happier times of the past and the dangerous present.

Soon enough, “Bloodline’s” main driving force becomes the entangled family drama. The series picks up the pace as family secrets start to come out, drawing viewers deeper into the Rayburn family drama. Many scenes introduce a new plot twist or detail about the family’s secret fear of Danny, keeping viewers engaged throughout the series.

The cinematography is not only gorgeous but also utilized as a way of visual storytelling. The beautiful setting of the Florida Keys creates a contrast against the clandestine manner of the Rayburn family. The serene images of the ocean and the lovable family hotel are representative of the superficial exterior of the Rayburn family.

Additionally, the cast chosen for “Bloodline” is filled with many all star celebrities, adding a sense of professional authenticity to the Netflix-only series. Actors such as Chandler, Ben Mendelsohn and Shepard provide contrasting personalities and philosophies to create a convincing troubled family dynamic.

The only pitfall of the series is that the opening credit song is too long, as it is supposed to cater to binge-watchers who do not want to sit through nearly a minute-long theme song for every episode. However, besides the intro song, the plot of the show is catered to the typical binge watcher, with short cliffhangers that are easily followed in one Netflix spree.

Overall, “Bloodline” impresses with an intriguing mystery, visual storytelling and a well-selected cast.

“Bloodline” is currently available to stream on Netflix. Season 2 will premier in 2016.
