Mira Costa’s girls soccer team won both of its two first games in the South High School annual soccer tournament on Saturday at South Torrance High School. The Mustangs defeated Hawthorne High School 4-0 and Oxnard High School 1-0 with a game winning goal from senior Michaila Franklin.
In the team’s 4-0 victory against Hawthorne, junior Emilie Flaig scored two of the Mustang’s 4 goals along with a goal apiece between Emma Lindberg and Vivianna Villacorte to secure their victory. In their second match, Franklin scored another game winning goal which came in the last 5 minutes of the game to result in a Mustang victory.
“We fought hard the whole game and just couldn’t get a goal, but in the last 10 minutes of the Oxnard game, everyone really increased their intensity,” Franklin said. “Then I got a nice cross from Morgan McCarroll and that was my only chance to score and I knew it might be my only chance, so I did the best I could to put it away, and I scored.”
The team now improves their overall record 3-0 going into next weekend, at South Torrance High School with the days still undetermined. According to Flaig, the Mustangs will hope to continue their dominance in this tournament with a handful of games next weekend even with their opponents still undetermined and with their fairly new team.
“I think so far we have had a great start to the season,” Flaig said. “We definitely found our rhythm in these past few games, especially for being a fairly new team. Everyone worked hard for each other and we hope to advance in the South tournament and keep up our winning streak alive.”
