Mira Costa’s girls water polo team placed fourth in the Benson Cup tournament at Garden Grove High School on Friday and Saturday, with top performances by seniors Kaylee Brownsberger scoring five goals and Yen Nguyen scoring two goals.
On Friday the team faced off against Laguna Hills High School and won 13-4, Yorba Hills and won 11-7 as well as Santa Barbara High School, but the team fell behind and lost 9-8 in overtime. On Saturday the team lost to Mission Viejo 12-9 and defeated Villa Park 7-6. According to Nguyen Costa got off to a great start this season.
“Since the season has just started, we are adjusting to some new players and the loss of others,” Nguyen said. “Our team has a lot of potential, motivation and spirit, that I know will take us far this season.”
The Mustangs are now 3-2 overall, and the team plays against Los Alamitos on Tuesday at home. According to Nguyen the team should do great against future competition.
“Our team will do very well against Los Alamitos,” Nguyen said. “Our drive to succeed is great and I am confident in our team.”
