Mira Costa’s girls basketball team was defeated by Los Alamitos Tuesday, 56-45, in the first round of the Hawk Holiday Classic tournament hosted by Ocean View High School. Junior guard Allie Navarette led the team to victory by scoring 14 points and accumulating a number of assists.
The Mustangs had trouble getting ahead of the Griffins on offense. They were able to keep the game close for the first half, despite trailing the entire time. According to sophomore guard Haley Herdman, Costa really let the game slip away in the fourth quarter.
“In the fourth our defense became weak, our shots stopped falling, and we were having a tough time getting rebounds,” Herdman said.
The 2-3 Mustangs will take on Ocean View high school Wednesday in the second round of the Hawk Holiday Classic. According to Herdman, Costa will have to better prepared mentally if they hope to be successful.
“We are getting better prepared mentally,” Herdman said. “Today is a new game and we are going to come out strong and learn from our mistakes from last night.”
