Mira Costa girls soccer competed in the semifinals of the South Holiday Tournament on Saturday at South High School. The girls won 3-0 against West Ranch and lost 2-2 (4-2) to El Segundo in the penalty kicks.

In the team’s victory against West Ranch, sophomore Emmie Farber, junior Delaney Whittet and senior Hanna Watkins scored once Costa got settled. In the second match, juniors Emelie Flaig and Viviana Villacorta scored. Late in the second half, El Segundo scored twice to tie the score 2-2 and send the proceedings to penalty kicks.

“In both games, we took a while to get our momentum going, but once we settled in, we were able to possess the ball for the majority of the game,” senior Caroline Keever said. “In the second game, we did a better job of possessing, but in the end, we were caught off guard and couldn’t finish our penalty kicks, which is always a lottery.”

The Mustangs, now 5-1, will play rival Redondo in competition for third place in the South Holiday Tournament at Redondo Union High School on Monday. According to Keever, the team will learn from the mistakes made in the last game and improve upon them to prepare for the upcoming game.

“It is still early in the season, and we are still working out the kinks and focusing on getting comfortable with each other’s playing styles,” Keever said. “We have been doing most things well, but now we need to work on playing a complete game.”
