Mira Costa’s girls basketball team defeated Trabuco Hills 65-39 Thursday in the third round of the Hawk Holiday Classic tournament taking place at Ocean View High School. Costa’s top performer was sophomore guard Kelli Toyooka, who played exceptional defense and had multiple assists.
Costa gave up a few points early in the first quarter, but was able to make a large run in the second half. According to sophomore guard Haley Herdman, the Mustangs were able to secure the game with their tight press and defense.
“Our press really helped us gain a lot of steals that eventually led to shots,” Herdman said.
The 4-3 Mustangs will play their next game Saturday at Ocean View High School against North Torrance or Orangewood High School. According to Herdman, Costa will continue to work on its press to prepare for the next game.
“We will practice today in order to prepare for tomorrow,” Herdman said. “We will be sure to work on our half court defense and press break.”
