Mira Costa’s boys basketball team defeated El Segundo High School 76-52 at El Segundo in the El Segundo Tournament on Tuesday. Despite being down in the first half, the Mustangs rallied and emerged victorious.
Junior forward Jonas Pittman scored 17 points and was a perfect 6-6 on all field goal attempts. His teammates consistently drove to the basket, opening opportunities for Pittman. 15 of his 17 points came from three point field goals.
“The other team was playing a zone defense which allowed my teammates to drive in and find me on the perimeter for open threes,” Pittman said.
Costa is 6-0 overall, and will play its next round of the El Segundo Tournament against Harvard-Westlake on Friday at El Segundo. The Mustangs will have to watch out for Freshman USC commit Cassius Stanley. According to junior guard Ryan White it will be one of the team’s biggest challenges thus far.
“Harvard-Westlake has some skilled players,” White said. “We are going to have to keep our focus the entire time.”
