Mira Costa’s girls basketball team was defeated 60-51 by North Torrance High School on Saturday in the fourth round of the Hawk Holiday Classic tournament hosted by Ocean View High School. Despite its loss, Costa was led by junior shooting guard Allie Navarette who scored 20 points and shot 80% from the free throw line.
Early in the game, the Mustangs were able to keep the score close. In the second half though, Costa was easily outscored by the Saxons, sealing its defeat. According to head coach John Lapham, the Mustangs were completely outscored in the end of the fourth quarter.
“We had a 2-point lead early in the 4th quarter, but North hit some big 3-point shots. They also made 15 of 16 free throws, so down the stretch we could not catch them,” Lapham said.
Now 4-4 overall, the team will next play a non-conference tournament game against Eastlake High School on Dec. 26 in San Diego. According to Lapham, the team needs to work on rebounding and getting the ball inside the paint before its next game.
“I think we will need to work on getting the ball inside more,” Lapham said. “Our rebounding will also need to improve.”
