Mira Costa Wrestling placed eleventh out of 30 schools with only seven wrestlers at the Mater Dei tournament at Mater Dei. Five of Costa’s wrestlers placed in the top five for their weight class.
Costa has brought up many players for varsity for their first time this season, and in this tournament Costa freshman Jacob Gordon came in third place and sophomore Jared Williams placing second along with sophomore Luca Mangiarano placing third and junior Joseph Gabele placing fifth. According to Gabele each team member has worked hard in order to earn their varsity spot.
“I worked with the coaches to improve my takedowns and it greatly helped me in my matches,” Gabele said. “I need to keep practicing if I want to place higher.”
Costa’s next meet is a dual match against West Torrance High School on Tuesday at Torrance High School. According to Gabele the team must attend at every practice if they want to win.
“I think that we will do well at West since we placed as a team at our last tournament, and we didn’t have our full lineup so I think we will do well now that more are back,” Gabele said. “West is a good team and we can’t take them lightly.”
