Mira Costa girls soccer defeated Redondo Union High School 3-1 away on Monday in the third place consolation match in the South Holiday Tournament. Costa’s ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and prevent Redondo from scoring led to another Mustang victory.
Goals from junior center midfielder Vivianna Villacorte, junior forward Delaney Whittet, and senior midfielder Kendal Douglass lead the Mustangs to their victory. According to Douglass, the game was a little shaky in the beginning but Costa came out with high intensity in the second half which Redondo couldn’t recover from.
“I thought I did well, considering that Redondo didn’t make it easy to defend their attack but I did the best I could to adapt,” Douglass said. “I was glad to have helped do the job to secure the win for the team.”
The Mustangs improve their record to 6-1. The team next plays against South Torrance High School at home on Wednesday. According to Douglass, South High School has had a good team in the past which means that the Costa team will have its work cut out for them in that game.
“I definitely don’t think it’ll be an easy game,” Douglass said. “Last year they gave us some trouble and were a fairly competitive team overall, but I think that if our defense stays as consistent as they have been and we can capitalize on our chances on offense then we can come out with a win.”
