Mira Costa’s Model United Nations hosted the twenty first annual LAIMUN conference at Mira Costa on December 5-6 and attended the Regional High School Model United Nations conference in San Francisco on December 9-12.
Costa took fifty students to San Francisco for RHSMUN. The conference was held at the Hilton at Union Square. The delegates completed sixteen hours of debate and took second place to Huntington High School.
“We placed second as a school and did very well considering that our team was made up of mostly sophomores.” Senior Under Secretary-General Priya Chatwani said.
Over 730 novice and 470 advanced delegates attended LAIMUN. Committees were run by Mira Costa’s Secretaries-Generals Seniors Olivia Everhard and Danielle Major, accompanied by Under Secretaries-Generals Seniors Priya Chatwani, Shubhayu Bhattacharyay, Jeff Burr and Jake Tibbetts.
“We started hosting LAIMUN 22 years ago to give our members a chance to be on the other side of debate and grading, and to give other schools the chance to debate in a fair, competitive environment.” Chatwani said.
The novice debate ended Saturday afternoon while the advanced debate continued into Sunday. Delegates discussed global issues such as terrorism in sub-Saharan Africa and nuclear medical technology. According to the LAIMUN 2015 review of the event, a competitive and realistic environment was successfully created between schools during the weekend long debate.
“When we go to a conference, we get to debate and compete,” Chatwani said. “When hosting, we try to put on the best conference possible for schools to do the same thing.”
LAIMUN has been a successful tradition at Mira Costa for years past and many years to come. Everhard and Major have been working since May to organize the conference.
“All thirty committees ran very well, the delegates felt debate ran smoothly and all the tours went well,” Major said. “All the schools in attendance were very pleased.”
