Scoring another victory.
The Mira Costa girls soccer team defeated South Torrance, 2-1, on Wednesday.
“Overall, we got the results we needed and kept a high percentage of possessions and had multiple chances to score,” junior center midfielder Viviana Villacorta said.
At the start of the first half, the ball was knocked out of bounds by South. Senior forward Kendall Douglas made a long throw-in to senior Hannah Watkins, who flicked the ball to junior midfielder Whitney Davis. Davis tapped the ball in from the far post, giving the Mustangs their first goal.
“Scoring early helped us establish momentum, and we were able to settle into a rhythmn,” Davis said.
Throughout the remainder of the first half Villacorta and junior outside midfielder Allison Roth created multiple scoring chances, including a near-header goal.
“For the most part, we made a lot of good plays and worked well together in the first half,” Roth said.
Midway through the second half, senior defender Mady Emerson scored a goal off of a corner kick made by senior outside midfielder Douglas.
“I was glad to see the amount of composure and chemistry we had throughout the game,” Emerson said.
As the game was coming to a close, South scored a long goal from outside the box, but this wasn’t enough to catch up to the Mustangs. The win improved Costa’s record to 7-1 overall. The Mustangs played Marymount High School yesterday, but the results were not available at the time of publication.
“I think that we know what we need to improve on from our game today, and we can execute better in the future,” Douglas said.
