In its first Bay League match of the season, Mira Costa wrestling lost to West Torrance High School on Tuesday, 60-15, with four matches ending in forfeits because of injured Costa wrestlers.

Senior Niilo Niemi managed to come out on top and pin his opponent. He was one of Costa’s three wrestlers to win their matches, the other two being freshman Jacob Gordon and senior Alex Chaney.

“Once the new players on the team have more experience in varsity matches and more players return from injury, we will perform better against tough teams like West,” Niemi said.

The team is missing key players due to injuries, including seniors Matt Savino, Jared Williams, and Chandler Cannon.

“West was a tough team to play and gave us a wake-up call,” junior Brendan Brady said. “Even though we had some guys out, we still need to improve on the little things.”

Costa’s next matchup is a tournament taking place at Rosemead High School today and Saturday. The team has to promote wrestlers from lower levels to compensate for the injured team members.

“We have been working on new techniques that will help us win matches,” Brady said. “ I hope this will help us take our game to the next level.”
