Mira Costa’s girls junior varsity water polo team played in place of varsity and lost to Culver City High School 10-4 in a non-conference game on Wednesday at the Culver City Plunge, with top performances by sophomores attacker Quin Nguyen and attacker Megan Benz.
The Mustangs started out slow in the first half and were losing 10-3 due to players not getting back on defense. By the second half, Costa stepped up its defense and goals by Benz and Nguyen led the team to victory. According to Nguyen, the team could have done better and its performance wasn’t the strongest.
“Our performance in the pool was decent, but considering we played a varsity team, the outcome of the game was to be expected,” Nguyen said. “Our defense really let us down, but the game was a good experience overall.”
The Mustangs, currently 4-4 overall, will play Capo Valley High School at home on Thursday. According to Nguyen, the varsity team is strong and should play well against Capo Valley.
“We look up to the varsity team, and I know they have the capability to do well against Capo Valley,” Nguyen said. “If the team has a solid game and players to its potential the team will have a good chance of winning.”
