With winter athletics coming into fruition many teams seasons have started their long road to CIF playoffs. Wrestling is already starting off to a great season with one tournament in first place and finishing in the top ten out of many teams.

The team has a great turn up with many returning varsity wrestlers and new upcoming freshmen helping to fill out the lineup. Coach Jim Chaney has brought up players from every grade level as long as they are ready to compete.

“I’m really impressed with how our sophomores and freshmen are stepping it up,” Chaney said. “ I feel good as long as we can be healthy and ready to play when in CIF when it really counts.”

This year’s team while lacks in seniors and juniors they make up in quantity in quality with the coach having high expectations for each wrestler. With many varsity wrestlers from last year not coming back this years team need to compete harder than ever if they want to win.

“I felt disappointed when some Solid Varsity wrestlers decided not to wrestle this year,” Chaney said. “But as I am watching the young wrestlers rise up to the occasion, I’m expecting us to do really well, before it is all over.”

With a strong CIF winning season last year the team hopes to come back again this year to win another CIF title. The team wants to win CIF and is doing everything the can to prepare for their matchups.

“For CIF, we’re working extremely hard in practice to fine tune our technique,” Junior Brendan Brady said. “Our goal this year is to not only repeat as dual meet champions, but to win the individual CIF tournament as well. I think if we stay committed to it, anything is possible with this team.”

The team has great players for every single weight class with Junior Joseph Gabele dominating in the heavy-weight class. With many other players currently trying to drop to their required weights for CIF and recovering from injuries.

“CIF has a formula where that won’t let kids cut weight more than two pounds a week,” Coach Jim Chaney said. “Once we get that and some injuries healed I think we are going to go on a roll.”
