Mira Costa’s girls basketball team defeated Eastlake High School, 64-52, Saturday in the first round of the So Cal Holiday Prep Classic tournament held annually in San Diego. The Mustangs’ top performer was junior Halle Maeda who displayed exceptional hustle and shot well from all over the floor.

Early in the game, Costa had a difficult time stopping Eastlake on defense. However, in the second half, the Mustangs were able to gain a decent sized lead. According to sophomore guard Haley Herdman, better defense helped the team hold their lead through the fourth quarter.

“Our offense did much better than our defense,” Herdman said. “We were able to get the ball inside and get good looks from the post.”

The 5-4 Mustangs will take on Schurr High School Monday in the next round of the tournament. According to Herdman, Costa will need to improve their press in order to beat Schurr.

“We really need to improve our press and box out to get more offensive and defensive rebounds,” Herdman said.
